Sermon Series Ideas by Topic

An empty teaching calendar is a design problem before it’s a preaching problem. Whatever you pick in September decides what your team’s building in October, and the series that gets chosen late is the one that ships with artwork somebody made on a Thursday.

Thirty ideas are sorted here by the season or the room they fit. Each one names what it’s for and roughly how long it should run, and every topic in the directory opens onto a page of real church work we’ve designed for it.

The list

30 series ideas worth stealing

Pick one that matches what your church is already asking people to do this season. A series with a sign-up behind it goes further than a better theme that hasn't got anything attached to it.

  1. 01

    Reset

A four-week series about starting a season on purpose rather than by accident. It works best in the fall or the first weeks of January, when the calendar's already put people in a fresh-start frame of mind, and it gives a groups relaunch something to point at.

  2. 02

    Rooted

Five weeks on the practices that hold a person steady when the schedule fills up. September is when families feel the squeeze first, so the argument for depth lands harder then than it'll ever land in a quiet month.

  3. 03

    Homecoming

A short welcome-back arc aimed at the people who drifted over the summer or who only visit in December. It's as much an invitation campaign as it is a teaching series, so the invite piece deserves as much attention as the title slide.

  4. 04

    Better Together

Four weeks making the case that following Jesus alone doesn't work. Run it the month your groups open, keep the sign-up live the whole way through, and you'll end the last week on a decision rather than a summary.

  5. 05

    One Another

A week per one-another command in the New Testament, taught as behavior instead of as sentiment. It's specific enough that a person can tell whether they actually did it, which isn't true of most community series.

  6. 06

    Made New

Four weeks in January on what actually changes a person, aimed at the resolution crowd without making fun of them. Done well it hands a first-time January guest a reason to come back in February, which is the whole job that month.

  7. 07

    Vision Sunday

One weekend that names where the church is going and what it's asking of people this year. Treat it as its own design job with print, a giving graphic and a take-home piece, rather than as the January series' opening slide.

  8. 08

    21 Days

A three-week prayer and fasting push, usually opening the year, with daily content running alongside the weekend messages. The daily guide's the real deliverable and it needs to be finished before day one.

  9. 09

    Teach Us to Pray

A week per line of the Lord's Prayer. Simple, repeatable, and it hands a new believer somewhere concrete to start instead of a general encouragement they'll forget by Tuesday.

  10. 10

    Anchored

Four weeks on what holds when circumstances don't. Steady rather than triumphant, which is what a congregation that's coming out of a hard year can actually receive.

  11. 11

    Live Free

Four weeks on the difference between forgiven and free, which is the gap a lot of long-time churchgoers are quietly living in and won't say out loud. Pair it with a private response option and a group that starts the week after it ends.

  12. 12

    Sent

Four weeks on the idea that everybody in the room was sent somewhere. The last week has to land on a specific sign-up with a deadline, or the series produces a good feeling and you won't see a single application.

  13. 13

    Backyard

A summer-long series on neighbors and the people who live within a mile of your building. It pairs naturally with an outdoor service or a cookout weekend, and it answers the objection that's raised whenever missions means overseas.

  14. 14

    Made For More

Four weeks on the gap between how a person is living and what they were made to do. End it on a serving sign-up rather than on a challenge, because a purpose series that hasn't got an assignment attached is the most common wasted month on a church calendar.

  15. 15

    Next Steps

Four weeks that each end with one specific step. Build the step card before you build the title slide, since the card's the piece that has to survive the walk to the parking lot.

  16. 16

    Practices

A week each on prayer, Scripture, silence, generosity and confession, taught as skills rather than as expectations. Concrete enough that someone can tell you on Friday whether they've managed it.

  17. 17

    The Long Haul

Five weeks on staying married through the ordinary middle years. It draws a different crowd than a series about romance does, and in most churches it'll draw more of them.

  18. 18

    Fight Fair

Four weeks on conflict, repair and apology treated as skills a household can learn. It's the marriage series couples quote back to you months later.

  19. 19

    Group Chat

A student series on friendship, loneliness and who gets to speak into your life. It hands student leaders a natural way to move a teenager from the big room into a small group, which isn't easy any other week.

  20. 20

    Tested and True

Four or five weeks on why a student believes what they say they believe. Apologetics lands better with teenagers when it's framed as honest questions rather than as a defense of the home team, and they'll tell you when it isn't.

  21. 21

    Honest Questions

A week per question the church usually dodges: suffering, science, hell, hypocrisy. Collect the questions from your own congregation a month ahead and say from the platform that's where they've come from.

  22. 22

    Songs We Sing

A week per song your church sings most, teaching the theology inside the lyrics. Familiar songs land differently for months afterward, and the band's part of the teaching instead of the opening act.

  23. 23

    Light in the Dark

Four Advent weeks following the light imagery all the way to the manger, with candlelight night as the payoff. Christmas design starts in September, so it's a fall decision even though it preaches in December.

  24. 24

    Open Hands

Weeks on generosity that reach past money into time, hospitality and forgiveness. The wider frame gets more of the room participating in week one, which is usually where a stewardship series falls down.

More ideas and graphics like this

  25. 25

    All Hands

Four weeks on the body of Christ taught as job descriptions instead of as metaphor. End on a sign-up weekend with team leaders standing in the lobby, because a general call to serve gets nods and you won't get names.

More ideas and graphics like this

  26. 26

    Go Public

Three weeks on why baptism is a public act rather than a private decision, pointed at one baptism Sunday. Keep taking sign-ups at the door, since about half the people who'll get baptized decide that morning.

  27. 27

    Living Fearless

Four weeks on fear as a daily companion rather than as a one-time enemy. Line up a care pathway and a counselor list before week one, because it's a series that produces real responses.

  28. 28

    Rest

Four weeks on sabbath, margin and the difference between a break and actual rest. Preach it in July, when the people who need it most have finally slowed down enough that they'll hear it.

More ideas and graphics like this

  29. 29

    Forged

A series on character built under pressure rather than announced from a stage. It carries a men's retreat weekend and it's got enough range to run six Sundays in the main service.

  30. 30

    Held

A women's series on being carried through a season you didn't choose. It works as a retreat theme and it reads just as well as the eight-week study that'll follow the retreat.

By topic

Every topic with real work behind it

A topic gets a page here once we've approved at least six pieces of church work that match it, so you won't find a page with nothing behind it. The counts are live.

January has its own longer walkthrough in our new year sermon ideas post. For the artwork itself, see sermon series graphics or what a plan costs.

Sermon series

Questions Churches Ask

How do you pick a sermon series?

Start from what your church is asking people to do this season rather than from a theme you happened to like. A series that lines up with a groups launch, a serve day or a baptism Sunday gives the message somewhere to send people.

How long should a sermon series be?

Four to six weeks covers most of them. Summer runs shorter and standalone because attendance rotates, and Advent's fixed at four Sundays plus Christmas Eve.

How far ahead should series graphics be designed?

About eight weeks for a normal series, twelve or more when print or apparel is involved, and September for anything landing at Christmas.

Want the artwork handled?

Pick the series. Your Squad builds the title slide, the bumper, the social set and the print, on your date rather than ours.
