If you’re on staff at a church, you know that the Christmas season starts long before December rolls around. The kids are back in school, the air is getting crisp, and you realize it’s time to plan your Christmas series.

OK, we know what you’re thinking—where do you even start?

Before you get too excited about your church’s Christmas sermon series, there are a few important things to think about.

Gather your team

First things first: gather your team. And hey, why not make it fun? Throw in some coffee and donuts (let's be real, everything's better with donuts).

We suggest including a range of people from your staff who understand your church’s needs, but it’s important to know which few have the final say. Try using this tool to gather diverse perspectives without having too many cooks in the kitchen: the view, voice, vote, and veto approach.

  • View: Who needs to share their perspective?

  • Voice: Who should have input in the discussion?

  • Vote: Who gets a say in the final decision?

  • Veto: Who has the authority to overrule if necessary?

Don’t forget to invite God into your decision-making process by prayerfully considering how He wants to use your church this Christmas!

Brainstorming Your Christmas Theme

Once you’ve got everyone together, it’s time to start bouncing some ideas around. Need some help getting the gears turning? Try asking these questions to find the message that will hit home with your church.

  • Does our Christmas theme stand alone or does it include an Advent series?

  • Are there events that will fall within this theme?

  • Will a topical theme serve our church best, or should we go straight to the Christmas story?

  • What is the Holy Spirit asking us to say to our church through the Christmas story?

Keep in mind that there are usually no wrong answers—just listen to God and decide on what works best for your church!

Make your message look as good as it sounds

The hardest part is done! Your theme is nailed down, and it’s time to decide what visuals will best tell the story. Do you want to keep things fresh and modern? Or go for a tried-and-true traditional Christmas feel?

No matter what you land on, it’s important to choose visuals that help your church connect with the message and feel the Spirit moving. Need some ideas to spark your creativity? Explore these Christmas theme ideas.

Graphics are impactful because they’re another way to share the incredible story of Christ's birth visually. Want some ideas?
